What are Skills in Claude and what are they used for

What is a Skill in Claude?

A Claude Skill is a plain text instruction file — specifically a file called SKILL.md — that extends the capabilities of the Claude AI assistant. Think of them as specialization modules: you "teach" Claude a specific set of knowledge, rules, and workflows so it operates as an expert in that area without you having to repeat the context every time.

Unlike traditional plugins or extensions, Skills don't require programming, don't install additional software, and don't modify the AI model. They're simply instructions written in natural language that Claude reads at the start of the conversation.

In summary: a Skill is a text file that turns Claude into a specialist — whether in creating Word documents, analyzing advertising campaigns, managing WordPress projects, or downloading YouTube videos.

How does a Skill work technically?

When you install a Skill in Claude Code or Cowork, the system automatically reads the SKILL.md file at the start of each session or when you invoke the skill with the corresponding command (for example, /docx). The file's content is incorporated into the model's context, which interprets it as behavioral instructions.

The internal format of a well-built Skill typically includes:

  • Role description: what specialist Claude should be in that context.
  • Available tools and commands: what actions it can execute.
  • Workflows: specific steps for common tasks.
  • Usage examples: samples of expected inputs and outputs.
  • Constraints: what to avoid or how to handle edge cases.

What are Skills used for?

The usefulness of Skills is enormous because they eliminate the need to write long, repetitive prompts. Once installed, the Skill acts as a permanent configuration. Some real-world use cases:

Professional documents

Skills like DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX turn Claude into an assistant specialized in creating and editing Office documents with professional formatting, data tables, presentations with consistent design, etc.

Web development and code

Skills like React Best Practices, Frontend Design, or Deploy to Vercel allow Claude to follow specific conventions of your tech stack, generate clean code, and deploy applications directly from the terminal.

Marketing and business

Skills like Competitive Ads Extractor, Twitter Algorithm Optimizer, or Lead Research Assistant transform Claude into a marketing analyst that follows proven methodologies to extract data, optimize content, or generate leads.

Personal productivity

Skills like File Organizer, Invoice Organizer, or Meeting Insights Analyzer automate repetitive administrative tasks that normally consume hours each week.

Where are Skills installed?

Skills are compatible with Claude Code (the command-line tool) and Cowork (Anthropic's desktop application). Installation is simple:

  1. Download the Skill's ZIP file from skillshubmcp.com/skills/.
  2. Extract it to the ~/.claude/skills/ folder on your computer.
  3. Restart Claude or start a new session.
  4. Invoke the Skill with the indicated command (e.g., /docx).

Skills vs MCP: what's the difference?

It's common to confuse both concepts. Skills are natural language instructions that condition Claude's behavior. MCP (Model Context Protocol) are technical connectors that allow Claude to interact with external tools: databases, APIs, file systems, etc.

In other words: a Skill tells it how to think, an MCP gives it access to tools. Many Skills leverage MCPs to execute real actions, but a Skill can work perfectly fine without any MCP.

Can I create my own Skills?

Yes. Creating a Skill is as simple as writing a SKILL.md file with clear instructions. At SkillsHub MCP we even have a Skill called Skill Creator that uses Claude to help you design, structure, and test your own Skills from scratch.
